Using Your Insurance
Insurance companies require that in order for health services to be covered, medical necessity must be met. In other words, as a client, I have to meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis in order to utilize insurance coverage for therapy/counseling services; without a diagnosis, insurance will not cover costs of services (as they'd deem it medically unnecessary).
Additionally, while most insurance plans include mental health coverage, not all do - it would be important to confirm coverage prior to beginning services.
Cost-Share Simplified
Your deductible is the amount of money you have to spend before insurance begins sharing the cost of services with you. Until you meet your deductible, you are responsible for 100% of service fees. Once your deductible is met, the responsibility for payment is shared between you and your insurance provider, with your portion often referred to as your co-pay or co-insurance amount.
Family/Couples Counseling
Due to insurance companies requirement to meet criteria for mental health diagnosis for services to be covered, most insurance companies do not cover couples/family therapy (as you cannot diagnose a couple/family).
An exception to this would be if your particular plan accepts Z-codes in leu of diagnosis.
